If you watched the “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” panel from the recent Star Wars Celebration, you probably know that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and director J.J. Abrams are saying that the upcoming film is the true end to the Skywalker Saga. However, considering there are plenty of characters that were introduced in 2015’s ‘The Force Awakens,’ and in the subsequent films, that haven’t had multiple films to flesh out their stories, there has always been the speculation that Lucasfilm could continue the story with some of those characters.
But according to a new interview, ‘Star Wars’ star John Boyega, who plays Finn in the new trilogy, if Lucasfilm does continue with some of the new characters in the future, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to include the former Stormtrooper.
“Honestly, the bottom of my heart, I don’t think that I am [going to appear after ‘Skywalker’],” revealed Boyega to MTV News. “This really is that movie. I think everyone doesn’t believe it but this is that war that just ends everything.”
Fans are a bit torn over the idea of what the end of the Skywalker Saga means for the franchise. For decades, on film at least, the Saga has been everything. So, it’s difficult to think what could happen after this 9 (plus two spin-offs) film series comes to an end in December. There’s a little solace in knowing that some of the characters that you’ve grown to love since 2015 could see more adventures on the big screen in the future.
However, there is another contingent of fans that ache for something new. And for as long as Lucasfilm sticks with this current crop of characters, and their relatively exclusive story, there’s so much of the galaxy far, far away that is yet to be fully explored.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens with ‘Rise of Skywalker.’ Perhaps everyone dies and there’s no possible way to move forward. We’ll find out on December 20.
