Sony To Develop A New Musical Featuring Fairy-Tale Princesses, Feminism, & Britney Spears Music

With “Bohemian Rhapsody” proving that musical dramas can damn near reach $1 billion worldwide, Hollywood studios are rushing around trying to snatch up any film projects that might include some of the biggest songs of all-time. Previously, these projects have been relegated to classic rock, or at the very least, artists that came out before 1990, it would appear that Sony is ready to jump into the new millennium with a new musical based on the music of Britney Spears.

The Wrap is reporting that Sony has bought the film rights to the upcoming stage play titled “Once Upon a One More Time.” The show, which is about to hit the stage in Chicago, tells the story of four princesses (as in the Disney, fairy-tale variety) that find a copy of the book “The Feminine Mystique,” by author Betty Friedan. And it’s through this book, which is credited for kicking off the second-wave feminism of the 1960s, the princesses somehow grow to love Britney Spears music? Honestly, that last part is where I’m lost.

But regardless of how these princesses incorporate the music into their lives, Spears’ songs will be heavily featured in the play, which is bound for Broadway in 2020. Spears is probably not the first singer you would think of when it comes to a blockbuster film, but her music has stood the test of time. Over the last two decades, Spears has released an absolutely ludicrous amount of hit songs, and has somehow stayed relevant even into recent years, where her residency in Las Vegas has somehow made her one of the most profitable singers around.

Obviously, there’s no word on when this film might be ready for release, as it appears that Sony is still in the early stages of development. Film fans will be happy to know that the star of “Crossroads” is probably not going to star in the film, however, Spears is onboard as a producer.

Okay, Backstreet Boys, keep your phone lines open because you’re up next.
