When Disney purchased Fox and the entirety of the Fox/Marvel licenses went under Mouse House control, fans of the “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four” franchises were happy. Finally, Marvel Studios can fix them! But what about the one series that didn’t need fixing — Ryan Reynold’s “Deadpool?” Well, that’s the big question with an as-yet-unknown answer.
And speaking at a recent event, “Deadpool 2” star Josh Brolin reveals that he doesn’t even know what the future might hold for his character Cable or any of the other folks involved in the hugely popular films.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Brolin (via ScreenRant). “I’m actually, I’ve been calling them, like, ‘What’s the deal with Cable, man?’ Seriously, 100 percent serious. They’re figuring it out. It’s a big world now, it just got much, much bigger. So who knows.”
Unlike the regular “X-Men” films or “Fantastic Four,” “Deadpool” is at the height of popularity, with two incredibly well-received, and financially successful, films. In fact, the second film, which was released last year, was even more successful than the first, while also introducing Brolin’s Cable and Zazie Beetz’ Domino, paving the way for an eventual “X-Force” film. But with Marvel Studios in control and the rest of the ‘X-Men’ franchise in shambles, the studio has a decision ahead of it.
Obviously, Disney would love to keep the “Deadpool” train chugging along, but can you do that while also simultaneously rebooting everything else? Of course, with Deadpool, the character is able to break the fourth wall and is one of the most meta characters in fiction, at this moment. So, if any character is able to spend five minutes in a film, speaking directly to the audience, saying, “Hey, Marvel Studios owns me now and this is how it is…,” then Deadpool can do it.
It would appear that the future of “Deadpool” is as unknown to the stars of the film as it is to the fans. Hopefully, we’ll find out soon enough what Marvel Studios and Disney hope to do with the Merc with a Mouth.
