Ridley Scott’s mooted new “Aliens” franchise was a xenomorph interrupted. Beginning with “Prometheus” and then continuing with “Alien: Covenant,” these prequels to “Alien” were supposed to have at least a third film in the series. However, ‘Covenant,’ which had a nearly $100 million budget, landed softly at the box office, only grossing $240 million worldwide, a significant drop from the $400 million globally that “Prometheus” took home in 2012. A sequel was teased at the end of ‘Covenant’ with Michael Fassbender’s David synthetic android character and possibly with Katherine Waterston’s Daniels character.
The film ended on a cliffhanger, with David tricking the crew and potentially intending to harvest Daniels’ body for further experimentation And Scott recently teased that there could be more ‘Alien,’ saying that ‘Covenant’ was the “perfect beginning.”
Speaking to Katherine Waterston for an upcoming edition of our Bingeworthy podcast discussing Paramount+’s “The Agency” series,” Waterston read Scott’s comments and was thrilled at the possibility of doing more.
“That’s so overwhelmingly exciting to me, that he might do another, even if [Daniels] bit the dust in that cryo-pod, I would be so excited for him to do another,” she explained. “I would love to be a part of it. I’d love to work with him again. He’s an incredible person, a legend in our time, and a wonderful collaborator.”
And yes, Waterston is hopeful her character survived and was just coming into her own in the last film.
“I personally—and maybe this is just because I’m selfish— but I saw a way that [Daniels] make it out of there,” she remarked. “I also always felt with that storyline that she was a budding hero, that in that film she was discovering she sort of had what it took to rise up but didn’t really get to yet,” she continued. “So, I mean, I would love to do it. But if it just comes to me being there with my popcorn, I’ll be there opening weekend.”
One of her next projects is co-starring in Netflix’s “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” which she is tremendously excited about.
“That was a case of just following a director who I’m obsessed with who made this film that I don’t think had a very wide release called ‘Caliber,’” Waterston said of director Matt Palmer. “it was just one of those films that stayed with me and I found so disturbing. And I became friends with him and said, ‘Whatever you do next, I’m there.’ And he said, ‘How about a horror film where you play the deranged mother?’ And it was a wonderful experience. What we can expect from it, I don’t really know because I haven’t seen anything. But it’s an amazing group of young actors. India Fowler, who plays Michael Fassbender’s daughter in ‘The Agency,’ is in it, and she’s the hero of that particular film. So I’m very excited to see what she does in it.”
As for Tim Sutton’s “Floodplain” with Ben Foster, Maria Bakalova, Justice Smith, and Mason Gooding? Waterston says it hasn’t been shot yet, and she’s unsure if it will get made, but she’s there for it if it does.
“I don’t know,” she said about the status of that one. “You know, I glom on to projects with great directors. And, of course, in the independent realm, sometimes that means that I’m attached for a couple of years before we get it together. So, I think that’s the case with that film.”
