Okay, ‘Matrix’ fans, it’s time to get excited. After years of teasing, with potential reboots and sequels, we now know that Keanu Reeves is coming back for a fourth film in the franchise. But to really get your excitement levels rising, recently the actor confirmed that he’s read a script for the film, confirming that we are just one step closer from the return of Neo, Zion, the Agents, and whatever else filmmaker Lana Wachowski is going to throw our way.

Speaking to ET on the red carpet for “Semper Fi,” which is produced by his sister Karina Miller, Reeves was asked about the status of “Matrix 4” and if he’s actually read a script for the film. He confirmed that a script exists and that he has read it but was light on details.
“It’s very ambitious. As it should be!” said Reeves.
The fact that a Wachowski sibling wrote a script for a “Matrix” film that can be described as “ambitious” is like saying water is wet. However, it’s nice to know that the film isn’t going to be some grounded take on the franchise. I mean, we’ve already seen some incredible things in the three previous films, taking a step back in any way doesn’t seem like a smart move.

All we know for sure is that the fourth ‘Matrix’ film will star Reeves alongside Carrie-Anne Moss and is being written and directed by Lana Wachowski. There have been rumors of a “young” Morpheus, but that’s clearly in the grain-of-salt category.
We are still pretty far away from actually seeing “The Matrix 4.” At the earliest, if they start filming the project in early-2020, we likely won’t see it until spring/summer 2021. That means that fans have at least a year and a half before they’ll know for sure if Warner Bros. is smart for bringing back the beloved franchise or if it’s some sort of cynical cash grab. Or both.
