'The Matrix 4' Rumored To Include A "Young" Morpheus

Sure, if you’re a fan of “The Matrix” trilogy, your immediate reaction to the news that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a fourth film is that of joy and excitement. But if you sit and think about it for a couple of minutes, you begin to wonder just how Lana Wachowski is going to be able to continue the series past ‘Revolutions,’ especially when you consider that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are coming back.

Aren’t the characters they play dead by the end of the third film?

Well, that’s just one of the questions you probably have, but after you hear the latest rumor about the direction of ‘Matrix 4,’ you may be left scratching your head even more.

According to Justin Kroll, a reporter with Variety, it would appear that not only is Neo (Reeves) and Trinity (Moss) returning to the franchise, but Morpheus, played by Laurence Fishburne in the first three films is expected to return, albeit not in the way you are expecting. Apparently, the rumor says that WB is currently on the lookout for an actor to play a young Morpheus in the upcoming ‘Matrix 4.’ Yep, a young Morpheus.

For those not familiar with the franchise, Morpheus is the leader of the human resistance and the person that opens Neo’s mind and allows him to exit the Matrix. He’s the elder of both Trinity and Neo, and unlike those characters, he lives through the end of the trilogy. That would lead many fans to believe that if they needed Morpheus in the new film, then why not cast Fishburne? But we’re talking about “The Matrix” and Lana Wachowski, so can we really rely on logic? Probably not.

Honestly, this could be a bit of a smokescreen, with the young Morpheus just appearing in flashbacks and Fishburne’s version of the character being revealed as dying offscreen or whatever. Or, there could be some crazy story about how the Matrix rebooted itself, leading to younger versions of characters that we know. Your guess is probably better than mine. So, speculate away!
