'Kidding' Trailer: Jim Carrey Returns To TV As A Children's Show Host Experiencing A Mental Breakdown

There was a time when Jim Carrey was the biggest actor on the planet. The comedian had a string of blockbusters that just seemed like it would go on forever. Then, as he turned his attention to more serious film work, he continued to thrive. However, in recent years, that’s not been the case, as Carrey has taken significant time between projects and hasn’t really had a high-profile gig in quite some time.

But that’s all going to change next month when Carrey’s upcoming dramedy premieres on Showtime. In the new trailer for “Kidding,” we see what Carrey really has in store for his first TV gig in over two decades. In the series, Carrey plays a popular Mister Rogers-esque character named Mr. Pickles. But instead of the always-cheery life that Fred Rogers seemed to live, Mr. Pickles is going through some heavy emotional drama. From failed relationships to possible mental breakdowns, it appears that Carrey is going to use his whole acting range in this role.

“Kidding” also features actors Frank Langella, Catherine Keener, and Judy Greer. The series premieres on Showtime on September 9.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In his first series regular role in over two decades, Jim Carrey stars as Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television, a beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds, who also anchors a multimillion-dollar branding empire. But when Jeff’s family begins to implode, he finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through the crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking. Starring Jim Carrey, Frank Langella, Catherine Keener and Judy Greer. Don’t miss the series premiere of Kidding Sunday, September 9 at 10/9C on SHOWTIME.
