Got a Tip?

Kristen Stewart Says David Cronenberg’s ‘Crimes Of The Future’ Takes Place In A World Without Physical Pain

One of the most exciting stories of 2021 is how David Cronenberg has taken a pause from his blossoming acting career (particularly in the “Star Trek: Discovery” series) to come back to filmmaking for “Crimes of the Future.” In a very Cronenberg move, “Crimes of the Future” seems to be borrowing the title from one of his earlier films and putting a new spin on the thriller. And according to one of the film’s stars, Kristen Stewart, ‘Crimes’ is a film that is definitely going to harken back to the more experimental days of the filmmaker.

Speaking to ScreenDaily, Kristen Stewart talked about her buzzy awards film, “Spencer.” But she also took the time to look ahead to 2022, talking about the Cronenberg film, “Crimes of the Future,” which reportedly wrapped production earlier this year. And in describing ‘Crimes,’ she explains how the film is very much a different beast than Cronenberg’s 1970 “Crimes of the Future.”

“It’s set in a world where people have evolved to a point where we don’t feel physical pain,” said Stewart. “Sex has changed quite a bit, and the new art form is growing organs. Viggo [Mortensen] is a famous performance artist. Léa Seydoux is his partner who tattoos these organs and displays them. My character becomes enamored with Viggo’s artist.”

As Stewart mentioned, she stars opposite Léa Seydoux and Viggo Mortensen in the new Cronenberg film. For those keeping track, this version of “Crimes of the Future” still focuses on a future with some stark changes from our current society. In the original film, the plot revolves around a rogue dermatologist who inadvertently created a plague as a result of a cosmetic procedure. So, yeah, the new version is basically just borrowing the title.

A release date has yet to be set for “Crimes of the Future,” but earlier this year, Cronenberg hinted that he wanted the feature to be ready for a spring festival release at Cannes
