When we talk about the Disney/Fox merger that finalized earlier this year, one of the large components of the deal is the fact that Disney now has all the rights to the Fox lineup of Marvel characters, including the X-Men. And in doing so, Disney now can get rid of all the various “X-Men” properties and reboot the whole damn thing. Thus, a show like “Legion,” which is a spin-off, but not anywhere close to the films you’ve probably seen, really just doesn’t have anywhere to go. And that’s a damn shame.
Like it or hate it, and you can justify both reactions, “Legion” is one of the more unique shows to grace TV screens over the last decade. Using the fact that the lead character suffers from mental illness, but also is perhaps the most powerful mutant on the planet, has led to some really bold choices in storytelling. And in the upcoming Season 3, which marks the final season for the series, those bold choices seem to be dialed up to 11.
The new trailer hints at cults, time-travel, “Alice in Wonderland,” and cyborgs, among many other odd things. You know, basically your typical season of “Legion.”
The trailer ends with a question, “How do you surprise someone who can go back in time and warn himself?” And that, right there, sums up the amount of crazy you get with a season of “Legion.”
The series stars Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza, and Rachel Keller. “Legion” is created and produced by “Fargo” mastermind Noah Hawley.
“Legion” comes back to FX on June 24.
Here’s the synopsis:
Legion follows the story of “David Haller,” a man who discovered he might be the most powerful mutant in the world. With help from a team of specialists, David learned he’d been haunted by a malicious parasite. Now at odds with everyone he once considered his friends, David enlists the help of a young mutant whose secret ability is the key to his plans to repair the damage he caused.
