Two years after he made his English-language debut with “The Sisters Brothers,” Jacques Audiard is back on set with his next film, “Les Olympiades.”

Variety has the scoop, with a report that Audiard is taking off the spurs and cowboy hat in favor of a modern setting. “Les Olympiades” is based on New Yorker cartoonist Adrian Tomine‘s “Killing and Dying.” Though the plot for the film is under wraps, the collection of graphic short stories “Killing and Dying” is described as “a wry exploration of loss, creative ambition, identity, and family dynamics.”
Audiard co-wrote the script for “Les Olympiades” with Léa Mysius, and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” helmer, Céline Sciamma. Audiard is also producing the film with Valérie Schermann through their Paris-based banner Page 114. Cristel Baras, who handled casting for both Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers,” and Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” is handling casting for “Les Olympiades.” Meanwhile, Pierre-Marie Dru who acted as music supervisor/producer for Netflix’s outstanding animated feature “I Lost My Body” will also work on the film’s music.
“The Sisters Brothers” was a pretty great film that didn’t get the attention it deserved, even if it did win the Silver Lion for Best Direction at Venice in 2018, and what else is there to be said about Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” that hasn’t already been said? Even without any plot details, the writing pedigree of the film alone should be enough to put this on everyone’s radar.
