It always piques the curiosity when an entertainer makes the leap to behind the camera. The latest to do so is Nicola Peltz Beckham, best known for her performance in M. Night Shyamalan’s ill-fated adaptation of “The Last Airbender” and her tabloid presence as a member of footballer David Beckham’s extended family. With the soon-to-be-released film, “Lola,” Peltz Beckham pulls triple duty, playing the titular character in the movie, which she also directs and wrote the screenplay for.
“Lola” tells the story of Lola James, a 19-year-old woman struggling to make ends meet and protect her younger brother (Luke David Blumm) from the abuse of their bigoted mother, Mona (Virginia Madsen). The trailer shows Lola’s attempts to survive and find happiness- working at a convenience store, enjoying a close relationship with her brother, encouraging his gender experimentation, and singing along to music in the car with a friend. Lola’s plans to move her brother away are upended by tragedy and a surprising pregnancy. Peltz Beckham described the story as one of “generational trauma, perseverance, and unconditional love.”
In addition to Peltz Beckham, Madsen, and Blumm, “Lola” will star Trevor Long (“Ozark”), Raven Goodwin (“Being Mary Jane”), and Richie Merritt (“Euphoria”)
Here is the official synopsis:
Set in 2002 Middle America, Lola revolves around nineteen-year-old Lola James (Peltz Beckham), who is desperately working to save enough money to get her little brother, Arlo (Luke David Blumm), out of their toxic home dominated by their mother, Mona (Madsen). All Lola wants is for Arlo to have a chance at the life she never had nor will. One tragic night, her whole world gets uprooted, and from that moment on, nothing will ever be the same.
Vertical Entertainment will release “Lola” in theaters and on VOD on February 9, 2024. Watch the trailer below.
