Today, it was announced by WarnerMedia in an official press release that they’ll be making a brand new standalone anime film for the big screen called “The Lord of The Rings: The War of Rohirrim.” This will be a collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema with Japanese director Kenji Kamiyama (“Blade Runner: Black Lotus,” “Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex“) attached to helm.

“The War of Rohirrim” explores and expands the untold story behind the fortress of Helm’s Deep, delving into the life and bloodsoaked times of one of Middle-earth’s most legendary figures, the mighty King of Rohan – Helm Hammerhand. The Battle of Helm’s Deep was one of the iconic Middle-Earth skirmishes that director Peter Jackson‘s brought to life in his beloved “Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers,” where the forces of Rohan and elves fought off waves of orc hordes unleashed by the white wizard Saruman at the behest of The Dark Lord Sauron.

They’ve also secured Oscar-winner Philippa Boyens, from the screenwriting team behind “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, as a consultant on the project. In addition, the screenwriting duo of Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews from The Henson Company‘s “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” is behind the script. The animated fantasy project is being fast-tracked, and a voice cast will be the next big step.

Sadly, neither Boyens nor Jackson will be involved with the Amazon series.

This won’t be the first time the franchise has seen animated adaptations. For ages, Tolkien fans had to settle with two animated film versions of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of The Rings.” That was until New Line Cinema, and Peter Jackson gave us two live-action trilogies.
