‘Lords Of Dogtown’ TV Series In Development From ‘The Shield’ Creator & ‘Queen Sugar’ Writer

There is no shortage of TV series coming our way in 2021 and beyond. From returning favorites and brand-new shows, the various streaming services and networks will have something new to watch nearly every day from here until the end of time. But that doesn’t mean the glut of TV series makes something like the new “Lords of Dogtown” show any less exciting.

According to Deadline, IMDB TV (which is apparently a thing?) is developing a new scripted “Lords of Dogtown” TV series based on the film of the same name and the real-life events that inspired it. The series hails from producer Shawn Ryan (of “The Shield” fame) and is set to be written by Kat Candler (“Queen Sugar”). “Lords of Dogtown” will also be executive produced by the film’s director, Catherine Hardwicke.

“Lords of Dogtown” tells the story of the rise of skateboarding culture in 1970s Southern California, as a group of young teens would take their love of surfing and translate it to a new style of skateboarding that would revolutionize the sport. The show will differ from the film by focusing on a rebellious teen girl that grew up in foster care and becomes ensconced in the skateboarding scene.

As mentioned, the series is written and produced by Candler. She’s probably best known as a writer-producer-director for Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed series “Queen Sugar.” Candler also directed the 2013 feature, “Hellion,” as well as episodes of recent TV series such as “13 Reasons Why,” “Home After Dark,” and “Sorry for Your Loss.”

Yes, the series is coming to IMDB TV, which is one of the many, many streaming options that exist today. However, the good news is that IMDB TV doesn’t actually require a paid subscription with its content being free to stream with ads.

There’s no release date for “Lords of Dogtown,” but this is definitely a series that we’ll keep our eyes on.
