Roku In Talks To Purchase Quibi's Library Of Shows

Quibi is alive! Okay, not really. But maybe the content library of “quick bites” will have a new home soon enough, thanks to Roku.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Roku and Quibi are in discussions to have the streaming technology company purchase the rights to the now-dead platform’s library of content. Why does Roku care about Quibi’s library of content? Well, Roku has launched The Roku Channel on its devices that is an ad-supported platform that gives customers a chance to view content from other studios’ libraries. And though Quibi doesn’t have much of a library, as it was only in existence for about half a year, the content that was created would give Roku some exclusives with some big names to tout.

We’re talking shows like “Dummy” with Anna Kendrick, “Most Dangerous Game” with Christoph Waltz and Liam Hemsworth, and of course, “Wireless” with Tye Sheridan (which we would say is unequivocally the best program that Quibi produced over its short run). All said, these are programs that Roku owners might actually be interested in watching and it wouldn’t even cost them a subscription to another service.

All that said, the deal isn’t done yet, according to the report. There are still things that might prevent the agreement from happening. One of the issues, per the report, is the fact that Quibi has a seven-year license on the content with a lot of the contracts with talent specifying that the shows wouldn’t be able to be shown on other services. However, the report also claims that there might be a way around that for Roku.

Regardless, for those wondering what was going to happen to all that Quibi content, it appears that it’s going to become fodder in the streaming wars with Roku hoping to bolster its own personal library to help it compete. And considering Roku is the highest-selling streaming device in the US, there are millions of folks that would instantly have access to the content.
