'Zama' Filmmaker Lucrecia Martel To Team With Björk On A New Stage Production

Lucrecia Martel is a filmmaker that isn’t scared of taking chances. Her films are most definitely not mindless blockbusters, but that doesn’t mean the filmmaker isn’t above discussing the possibility of a superhero film (see “Black Widow”). And if she’s not making critically-acclaimed, festival-darling films, she’s out there directing incredible music videos. Now, she’s moving to the world of stage productions, in a new collaboration with another capital-A artist Björk.

It was recently announced that Martel, whose most recent film is the acclaimed “Zama,” will be joining the Icelandic musical artist on a new stage production that’s hitting New York City later this year, titled “Cornucopia.” While Björk hasn’t really given many details, she says the production will be her “most elaborate stage concert yet, where the acoustic and digital will shake hands, encouraged by a bespoke team of collaborators.”

As mentioned, Martel is a filmmaker that has had her work showcased at the highest levels, including in-competition at Cannes, as well as winning awards at Sundance and Berlin. And yes, she even talked to Marvel Studios about working on the upcoming “Black Widow” film, which she passed up due to the fact the studio didn’t want her to direct the action scenes.

“I feel very proud to be able to work with one of the most innovative women in the world of music, to collaborate in a Björk show is a passport to the 22nd century,” said Martel in a statement (via CinemaTropical).

Björk also released a statement via Twitter, saying, “I have admired [Martel’s] work for a long time and cannot believe my blessing to have her here to complete this utopian world of ours in the shed.” And because she’s Björk, the artist signed off on her statement with the word “warmthness.”
