It’s 2021 and if I were to ask superhero film fans to name two actresses they’d like to see star as sibling villains in the new “Shazam!” sequel, it’s highly unlikely they would name Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. Well, apparently director David F. Sandberg is going to show us why those are the perfect ladies to haunt Zachary Levi’s superhero in the upcoming “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.”

According to a new report from Variety, Warner Bros. is bringing in Lucy Liu to co-star in the upcoming “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” And to make matters even more intriguing, the role that Liu will play is that of Kalypso, the sister of Hespera (played by Helen Mirren). While their exact motivations in the film are unknown, they’re both set to be villains and are mythological characters who are the daughters of Atlas. And judging by the title of the film, we’re going to go out on a limb and guess the two daughters of Atlas are furious.
Lucy Liu is probably best known for her role in the “Charlie’s Angels” films from a couple of decades ago. Since then, she’s appeared in a number of films over the years, including as a voice in “Kung Fu Panda.” Most recently, she had a long-running starring role on the CBS procedural series, “Elementary.”
The original “Shazam!” hit theaters in 2019 and followed Levi’s buff Superman-esque hero that is actually the alter-ego of young teen, Billy Batson (Asher Angel). The original film ended with Batson’s foster family all gaining superhero alter-egos, which seems to be setting up the thrust of the next story.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” isn’t expected to arrive in theaters until June 2, 2023.
