Capcom‘s mega-popular “Resident Evil” video game franchise is still going strong after debuting back in 1996, and a new game, “Resident Evil Requiem,” is releasing later this month, leading to a live-action promotional trailer for the upcoming game, featuring actress Maika Monroe channelling her horrror roots, starring in pics like “Longlegs” and “It Follows.”
The ninth installment brings the franchise back to Raccoon City with FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy (a longtime franchise heroic figure) as the game’s two main characters. “Resident Evil” is within a world dealing with the devious Umbrella Company, unleashing the T-virus on the population, which turns humans into zombies, or in rare cases, mutates them into even more deadly monsters.
This new ad harkens back to the live-action “Resident Evil 2” trailer from the late 1990s that had late actor Brad Renfro (“The Client,” “Bully”) appear and was shot by “Night of the Living Dead” director George A. Romero. The legendary horror filmmaker once tried to get his own feature made, but was unsuccessful. In 2002, Paul W.S. Anderson ended up bringing the horror survival game to the big screen with model/actress Mila Jovovich playing a new character named Alice, who would end up the franchise protagonist.
Speaking of “Resident Evil” movies, on-the-rise writer/director Zach Cregger, after delivering us the one-two-punch of acclaimed original horror flicks “Barbarian” and “Weapons” (Amy Madigan nabbed a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination), has been overseeing a new feature reboot that stars Austin Abrams (“Weapons”), Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”), Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), and Zach Cherry (“Fallout,” “Severance”).
Sony Pictures has already announced they’ll be releasing that new Cregger pic on September 18, which means a first-look teaser trailer is likely on the way with CinemaCon taking place in Las Vegas in April (where Sony is expected to promote their 2026 slate of films).
You can watch that new “Resident Evil Requiem” short that includes Monroe and is helmed by Rich Lee (“War of the Worlds”) below, as the video game itself arrives in stores and online on February 27.
