If you’re a fan of absurd, offbeat filmmaking, you definitely should already know about the work of French filmmaker, Quentin Dupieux. The writer-director has spent his entire career taking strange concepts and ludicrous characters and making it all work in features such as “Rubber,” “Wrong,” “Reality,” and the recent “Deerskin.” But “Mandibles” takes his trademark surrealism and adds slightly new layers.
As seen in the trailer for “Mandibles,” the film follows the story of two, uh, not-so-smart guys that find a giant fly in the trunk of their car. So, what are you to do when such a thing happens? Well, naturally, you take the fly and try to train it and make a killing off of the spectacle. The film stars Gregoire Ludig, David Marsais, Adele Exarchopoulos, India Hair, Romeo Elvis, Coralie Russier, and Bruno Lochet. Of course, as mentioned above, “Mandibles” is written and directed by Quentin Dupieux, who has definitely carved his own niche in the film world over the years.
Though the ridiculousness and absurdity in the new film is nothing new for Dupieux, in our review of “Mandibles,” it’s pointed out how the filmmaker has gone for something a bit “sunnier” with his latest. “The really new news of ‘Mandibles’ however, is, where in the past Dupieux’s surrealism always had a cynical, sinister, even murderous undercurrent, here, he lets himself be cheerful, as though infected by the sweet-natured bromance between his appealing, appalling idiot leads,” the review states.
