The future of Margot Robbie‘s DC Comics character Harley Quinn is a little unclear at the moment, outside of her upcoming appearance in James Gunn‘s “The Suicide Squad,” a sort of soft reboot-y sequel to the David Ayer film from 2016. While Cathy Yan‘s “Birds of Prey” was originally billed as a solo Harley Quinn film, it ultimately became another group lineup with Quinn partnering up with female characters such as Huntress, Black Canary, Renee Montoya, and the young Cassandra Cain.

During a recent chat with Total Film, the Aussie actress mentioned that she believes that Harley Quinn works a lot better surrounded by other characters, leading to unpredictable moments and giving the impression that a solo film might not be interesting to audiences, at least from Robbie’s perspective.
“Something I noticed about Harley from the start is she’s always going to have more fun when she’s in a group dynamic,” Robbie told Total Film. “I’ve always said putting Harley on her own would be like putting a kid on a playground on their own. It’s never going to be as fun as when it’s populated with other kids to play with. [When she’s] in a group, you’re always going to see the most come out of her personality because she’s got people to play with and pick apart or fall in love with or backstab or whatever. She’s always decided how she feels about the people around her and then acts accordingly, which is always unpredictable.”

A popular mature cartoon series is only helping increase Harley Quinn’s reach to audiences outside of the hardcore DC fans. While there had been early reports of a team-up movie with Jared Leto‘s Joker, it appears the studio’s moved beyond that idea. When we see Harley Quinn again after this summer remains unclear.
A “Gotham City Sirens” movie had been in the works from David Ayer before the studio pivoted to “Birds of Prey.” “Sirens” would allow Harley Quinn to interact with Poison Ivy and Catwoman (likely won’t be Zoe Kravitz). Robbie has been clear in multiple interviews that she wants to see the same-sex relationship of Ivy and Quinn explored in a film, but again with Ayer out of the DC Picture, it seems like “Gotham City Sirens,” or at least his version of it, has been scrapped for now.
Hypothetically, there is always the possibility that director James Gunn may return to make “Suicide Squad 3” once he’s finished with “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3” or Margot Robbie shows up as Harley in the upcoming “Batgirl” movie as one of the rogues of Gotham, penned by “Birds of Prey” screenwriter Christina Hodson and directed by the duo of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Bad Boys For Life,” “Ms. Marvel“). Both could be good options for Harley Quinn to be part of more group projects.
A reminder that “The Suicide Squad” will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6.
