It’s quite the task to impress a filmmaker and cinema historian like Martin Scorcese (“Killers of The Flower Moon”). Still, writer/director Robert Eggers is the type to exceed expectations, and his fandom grows with each release. Scorcese recently chatted with Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, and the subject moved to “Nosferatu,” where the director gushed about Eggers’ work on the well-crafted period horror remake of the classic silent 1920s film.
Notably, a filmmaker who isn’t always on the same page with the taste of modern audiences, Scorsese said to Karger when asked about his take on Eggers and “Nosferatu,” “Amazing, anything this guy does, amazing. That’s one film you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in there. You’re in Transylvania, and it’s really, woah…Man, he’s something.”
High praise indeed.
“Nosferatu” has been a passion project for Eggers as the film had been in the works for a while now and nearly got made with different actors (Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson had been involved but had to exit over scheduling issues) once attached before Nicholas Hoult and Lily Depp-Rose were ultimately chosen.
Eggers’ next entry will be a 13th-century horror film, “Werwulf,” featuring what the title would suggest, werewolves, and it should be a glorious interpretation of that lore. He’s also reportedly taking over duties on Sony’s in-development “Labyrinth” sequel that once had Scott Derrickson (“The Gorge,” “Doctor Strange”) attached to the helm. Some other projects Eggers could end up making include a completed script for a medieval knight movie, and he wants to tackle a Western, too.
We’ll keep close tabs on what Eggers does next, because who wouldn’t? And by the sounds of things, so will Mr. Scorsese.
