‘Werwulf’: Robert Eggers Says His Upcoming Pic Is “The Darkest Thing I Have Ever Written, By Far”

In honor of Robert Egger‘s latest film, Film At Lincoln Center curated a short series entitled “Conjuring “Nosferatu”: Robert Eggers Presents” that runs through this weekend. And to the delight of those in attendance for last night’s screening of “Nosferatu“, Eggers showed up for a Q&A with Jarin Blaschke, Linda Muir, and Craig Lathrop to discuss the film’s aesthetic.

But amid that discussion, Eggers also teased one of his upcoming projects, “Werwulf.” So what did the horror director have to tell the Lincoln Center audience about his next project with Focus Features?

“It’s a medieval werewolf movie,” Eggers told the crowd before being interrupted by cheers. Eggers laughed at the response, then followed up, “And this is the darkest thing I have ever written, by far.” If that’s true, then “Werwulf” will certainly be something sinister. After all, it’s hard to get darker than (spoiler alert for those unfamiliar with Eggers’ work) witches mashing up babies in a mortal and pestle. Or a demonic entity continually ravaging a married woman in her sleep; y’know, lighthearted stuff.

Still, the darker the better for Eggers fans. And it’s what everyone expects from his next project, along with meticulous period detail, the use of historically accurate sources, etc. “Werwulf” also sees Eggers reunite with Icelandic novelist Sjón. The pair co-wrote 2022’s “The Northman,” with the mixed response to that film a distant memory after “Nosferatu” triumphed at the box office.

And since “Nosferatu” made $174 million in its box office run, over three times its budget, it’s safe to expect Focus and Egger to start production on “Werwulf” as soon as possible. So while Eggers’ tease last night is more than welcome, expect bigger news, like who will star in the film, very soon.

“Werwulf” hits theaters on Christmas Day 2026.
