It’s difficult to say there’s really any silver lining to the ongoing SAG strike. However, if there is something we can point to as a positive by-product (other than the hopeful fair resolution to the labor disagreement), it’s the fact that Martin Scorsese has been the sole person out there promoting “Killers of the Flower Moon.” That means we’ve gotten interview after interview with the legendary filmmaker, allowing him to cover just about ever angle of his new film, as well as giving a bit of retrospective commentary on his career. It’s been great to see just so much Scorsese. (Though, you have to imagine he’s exhausted at this point.)
Well, perhaps the best showcase of Scorsese’s huge media blitz for “Killers of the Flower Moon” is a new in-depth, nearly-one-hour interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. And it’s the fact that this is for Apple Music that adds a special wrinkle to the interview. Sure, Scorsese covers all of the basics surrounding ‘Killers’—the film was rewritten to focus on the relationship, he worked closely with the Osage people, etc…—but he also is given the chance to talk about another passion of his—music.
So, in the interview, you hear Scorsese talk about “The Last Waltz.” You hear him discuss growing up with asthma and falling in love with music when he couldn’t really go outside and play with other kids. If you’re a fan of the filmmaker’s career, it’s clear that music has played a crucial part in his growth as a person, so it’s nice to see him discuss something that isn’t really covered in a ton of different interviews. It’s definitely nicer than hearing people try to get him to talk shit about Marvel Studios.
