One of the biggest acquisitions in the last year for Netflix isn’t a particular movie or TV series. No, it was Ryan Murphy. The superstar producer is responsible for some of the biggest series on TV, with FX airing his long-running “American Horror Story,” “American Crime Story,” “Pose,” and “Feud” series, just to name a few. Now, with Netflix shelling out a reported $300 million to land an overall deal with Murphy, the streaming service is starting to announce projects that show just how important the deal was for the company.
Leading the way is clearly his upcoming film, “The Prom.”
Deadline is reporting that Murphy is set to direct and produce a film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical. But even though the filmmaker is a huge name, himself, the real draw for “The Prom” isn’t the man behind the camera. Instead, it’s the sheer talent he’s signed for in front of the camera.
The report says that Murphy has brought on stars Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Ariana Grande, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, and Andrew Rannells to star in the musical. That’s one hell of a cast.
“The Prom” is about two failing Broadway musical creators that are looking for a cause that will revive their careers. They find that cause by locating a young woman, Emma, in a small town that isn’t allowed to bring her girlfriend to prom. Streep and Corden are set to play the two leads, with a casting search ongoing for Emma.
Production is expected to ramp up by the end of the year, with Netflix looking for a fall 2020 release. Netflix is said to be aiming for a theatrical run before the film hits the streaming service in hopes that “The Prom” can attract some awards buzz.
