Last week, we learned that co-lead Tom Hardy had been shown the exit from Guy Ritchie and Paramount+‘s British crime series “MobLand,” and a new report is attempting to shed some light on why the actor was dismissed ahead of the Season 3 greenlight and the Season 2 debut, as it looks like he got on the nerves of his fellow actors Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren by keeping them waiting for hours
That report is coming from The Hollywood Reporter and is citing a source (who says the actor’s fate hasn’t been entirely set) that Hardy refused to leave his trailer, leaving co-stars (Mirren, Brosnan, and others) and crew waiting for the actor to show up to complete scenes. According to the outlet, Hardy is also butting heads with producers, such as executive producer Jez Butterworth and others at David Glasser‘s production company 101 Studios (Glasser is known for removing and replacing showrunners/creatives on the Taylor Sheridan TV projects like we change shirts).
“He refused to come out of his trailer for hours at a time,” THR’s unnamed source said of the Hardy on-set drama, which has led producers to reconsider his involvement moving forward. “He kept the cast waiting, [which is] a power play. Keeping Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, and others waiting is career suicide, I would wager.”
This narrative isn’t all that new or surprising; it mirrors something we’ve heard before when he made George Miller‘s post-apocalypse action epic “Mad Max: Fury Road” and clashed with Charlize Theron on that set as well due to his habitual tardiness.
We’re still waiting on Paramount+ to give an official premiere date for “MobLand” Season 2 and a teaser trailer, but it’s expected to drop sometime in the latter half of the year, and that sounds about right given they wrapped filming in March, so we’ll have to be patient about that next batch of episodes. Also, a Season 3 renewal would likely be dependent on audience viewership and whether they’ll be able to find a replacement actor at a similar stature as Hardy. Jason Statham or Stephen Graham feel like fellow Ritchie alumni who could fill those shoes, if he’s not coming back, but we’ll see (THR claims filming could begin as early as September if things work out).
“MobLand” isn’t the only streaming series Ritchie is involved with, as he has “Young Sherlock” at Prime, and the highly anticipated second season of “The Gentlemen” on Netflix arrives later this year in the fall. The Playlist gave the first season of “MobLand” a glowing review, so we’d be a little sad if things ended on a sour note and the show didn’t get the full run it deserves due to talent clashes.
