Got a Tip?

Movie About The Tragic Death Of WWE Wrestler Chris Benoit In The Works

nullDarren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler” is generally regarded as a fine piece of filmmaking, but like almost every movie, that film did have its detractors. So while many consider it the only wrestling movie they have to see, SRG Films is asking for “one…more…shot,” with their upcoming adaptation of Matthew Randazzo’s book, “Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit and the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry.”

The film, which carries the ‘That Could Mean Almost Anything’ title of “Crossface,” is about how Benoit’s “combination of drug-use, depression, and head trauma became increasingly impossible for him to handle. The true story made headline news in 2007 when Chris murdered his wife and young son before taking his own life.” The murder-suicide shook the wrestling and sports world, as Benoit was a hugely popular figure and record holding champion. His death came at what was arguably the height of his career, and the book in particular is very critical of the effect the industry had on his breakdown which led to his drastic actions.

The film was written by former Weinstein Co. employee Sarah Coulter, who must know a thing or two about Oscar campaigns. About the film, Coulter said, “People immediately point to steroids, never thinking about the brain trauma these wrestlers can, and do, incur in their profession…The Benoit story is one that needs to be brought into the light.” In any event, the material should be lightning rod for those invested in the sport, but whether or not will appeal to those outside of it will be a challenge.

SRG Films is currently looking at different directors and actors to take on this weighty material, with a fall 2012 start in the works. [via ComingSoon]
