Way back in 2021, it was announced that Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell were teaming up with Todd Solondz’s dark comedy, “Love Child.” Then we heard nothing. That is, until February of this year when it was announced that Weisz and Farrell were replaced by Elizabeth Olsen and Charles Melton. But since then, we haven’t heard a peep. And according to Olsen, that’s because the film is finding it very difficult to secure financing.
Speaking to Vulture, Elizabeth Olsen was asked what the status is for the film “Love Child,” which is written and directed by indie filmmaker Todd Solondz. This must have struck a chord for Olsen, as she opened up about the very big issue of securing financing for indie films in 2024.

“I’m not a producer on it, but I’ve never hustled more for a movie that’s having a hard time getting made,” said Olsen. “There’s so many things I could say about that in private. It really comes down to having really responsible budgets. But not every movie can be made with favors for crews, right? You can’t ask crews to be paid a really shitty wage. So I don’t know. I find it all to be really frustrating right now, specifically for film.”
Olsen went on to talk about how she is usually linked to genre filmmaking, which leads to the constant question about what genre a new project will fall into. This is a frustrating question for her.
“I don’t know what the hell the genre is for ‘His Three Daughters,’” said Olsen. “I find it funny and find that it has a lot of heart. Maybe it’s a dramedy. What is that even? I find that that question is part of raising the money, and it’s so boring.”
As for opening up about what exactly “Love Child” is, in terms of plot or any sort of tease, Olsen didn’t give any details but said she just wants everyone to know that Solondz needs money for the film.
“No,” Olsen said. “But if anyone’s writing about this interview, if you guys want to make a big, bold notice that says, ‘Todd Solondz needs money to make a movie,’ that would be great!”
For those unfamiliar, Todd Solondz is a unique filmmaker who really marches to the beat of his own drum. He’s probably best known for dark comedies such as “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” “Happiness,” and “Dark Horse.” The last film he made was 2016’s “Weiner-dog.”
You can see Elizabeth Olsen in her new film, “His Three Daughters,” which is available now on Netflix.
