Mudbound's Rachel Morrison Makes History With 2018 ASC Awads Nod

The American Society of Cinematographers announced the 2018 nominees for the ASC Awards. Like many guild honors it’s seen as a precursor for the equivalent category at the Academy Awards and this year that’s good news for Netflix and “Mudbound.”

“Mudbound’s” Rachel Morrison became the first woman ever nominated for this honor by the ASC and if she earns an Oscar nomination she’d also make history with the Academy in that respect (both stats are embarrassing, frankly).   Morrison’s work in the period drama was recognized alongside the achievements of Bruno Delbonnel (“Darkest Hour”), Hoyte van Hoytema (“Dunkirk”), Dan Lausten (“The Shape of Water”) and Roger Deakins (“Blade Runner 2049”).

Dee Rees talks “Mudbound” and Netflix as a place for “auteurs”

Most notably, the ASC snubbed Sayombhu Mukdeeprom‘s magnificent work in “Call Me By Your Name,” but international voters of the Cinematography branch may have something to say about that when the Oscar nominations are announced in two weeks.   Toby Oliver (“Get Out”), Vittorio Storaro (“Wonder Wheel”), Ed Lachman (“Wonderstruck”) and Ben Davis (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) now also have a slim shot at cracking the field.

On the television side, “Game of Thrones” earned two nominations while “The Crown,” “The Man in High Castle,” “Legion,” “Mindunter” and “The Deuce” were all recognized.

The winners will be announced during a ceremony on Feb. 17.
