The worst thing about making dream projects is that once they’re made, the dream is over. Duncan Jones has been thinking about “Mute” for years, and now it’s finally happening thanks to Netflix. However, his ambitious movie seems to be hitting the streaming giant somewhat hastily (there’s no “Bright“-style rollout for this one), which makes us a bit curious about the final product. However, we’re still excited to see the director behind “Moon” and “Source Code” indulge in all the genres he adores.
“ ‘Mute’ is an encapsulation of everything I am fascinated by; noir, science fiction, and unique people in trouble because of who and what they are. I’m delighted to be able to return to Berlin for the shoot, a place I lived for a period of time growing up, and I’m excited to be working with Netflix on a film that is so close to my heart,” he said when production started.
The other question we have is whether or not there will be an opportunity to see “Mute” on the big screen – something Jones himself thought would be a possibility. “I think they’ll do what they did with ‘Beasts Of No Nation,’ where they do a theatrical simultaneously to a Netflix release,” the filmmaker said in 2016.
Here’s the official synopsis of the film:
Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wise-cracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.
“Mute” hits Netflix on February 23rd. The full trailer arrives Tuesday: watch the all-too-brief teaser below.
