The question this winter will be — how far back in time do you want to go? The mid-1800s Europe (with a bit of song to go with it?) or California in the '40s and '50s? And which stars do you want to hang out with? Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway or Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn and Emma Stone? Well, luckily it's not a "Sophie's Chioce" situation and you can see both, and some new artwork is here to entice you and pry some holiday money out of your wallet.
First up, Tom Hooper is swinging in a big way for the Oscars with his impressive looking "Les Misérables." The adaptation of the celebrated and beloved hit musical isn't going the easy way out, as Hooper has shot the film with the singing performed live on set, not synced to a studio recording. A risky gamble to be sure, but he looks to have pulled it off and delivered an epic movie along with it. In addition to the aforementoined stars, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Sacha Baron Cohen and more round out the cast. It lands on Christmas Day.
And once you've recovered from your holiday eating binge and drunken New Year's Eve party, you can head back to cinemas for the slightly delayed and retooled "Gangster Squad." This based-on-a-true-story tale of the guys who went off the books to take down gangster Mickey Cohen either looks like an awesome piece of pulp or…not. But we just hope Ryan Gosling's chirpy voice doesn't annoy us for the whole movie. Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Michael Pena and more join in the fun. It gets locked and loaded on January 11th. [Facebook/The Film Stage]
