‘Elio’ Trailer: Pixar’s Colorful Off-World Alien Misadventure In Friendship Arrives In Theaters On June 20

Powerhouse award-winning animation studio Pixar is back with, “Elio,” an all-new original theatrical effort that sees a friendless young boy thrust into an off-world adventure as he is confused as a representative of Earth and leads to all sorts of hijinks with a collective of aliens in the mix. The new pic which just saw a new trailer released by Disney is directed by Madeline Sharafian (“Burrow”), Domee Shi (“Bao,” “Turning Red”), and Adrian Molina (co-screenwriter/co-director of “Coco”) along with the involvement of producer Mary Alice Drumm (associate producer of “Coco”).

Assembled for the voice cast we’ll hear Yonas Kibreab as Elio, recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa, and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO.

Disney has provided the following synopsis for the highly-anticipated summer movie:

This summer, moviegoers will meet Elio, an 11-year-old whose biggest wish is to get abducted by aliens, as well as his Aunt Olga, and Glordon, Elio’s unexpected first friend who happens to be an alien. In this big-screen adventure, Elio will travel millions of miles across the universe encountering a host of out-of-this-world creatures who just might help him figure out exactly where he belongs.

For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers—in Disney and Pixar’s all-new feature film “Elio,” the universe calls back! The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.

The new animated pic is certainly giving off vibes of the 1980s classic “Flight of The Navigator” (“Star Wars” franchise director Bryce Dallas Howard was once attached to tackle a remake for Disney), “E.T.,” “Starfighter,” and the super obscure Roger Corman-produced kid-in-space flick “Space Raiders.” Then again, Pixar takes inspiration from all corners of entertainment and sometimes their ideas overlap with existing material as just a matter of coincidence.

Pixar is coming off a massive rebound, after some box office missteps, with “Inside Out 2” making a massive $1.6 billion globally. However, we shouldn’t be automatically expecting those kinds of numbers with an original project like “Elio” as we won’t know how a family-friendly audience is going to react and positive word-of-mouth has been increasingly key to these animated films making big bank.

Feel free to check out the latest trailer for “Elio” below and the film will be debuting in theaters on June 20.
