'Live Die Repeat' All Over Again: WB Hires New Writer For 'Edge Of Tomorrow' Sequel

Since it’s 2014 debut, where the film did modest box office but was a big hit with critics and film fans, there has been rumblings of a sequel to “Edge of Tomorrow,” aka “All You Need Is Kill,” aka “Live Die Repeat.” And after a variety of false starts, it would appear that Warner Bros. has finally found the man that will, ugh, repeat the first film’s success. Get it?

According to Deadline, writer Matthew Robinson has been hired to pen the script for whatever ridiculous title the “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel will be called. Robinson is probably best known as the writer-director of “The Invention of Lying,” but his most recent work includes a “story by” credit for the terrible children’s film “Monster Trucks.” While his IMDB might not elicit much enthusiasm, apparently he had quite a killer pitch for this sci-fi sequel. So fingers crossed.

For those that missed the original “Edge of Tomorrow,” then it’s safe to say you skipped one of the better sci-fi films of this decade. Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the film followed the futuristic hijinks of a public relations officer that gets called to the front lines of a war and gets killed. But similar to “Happy Death Day” and “Groundhog Day,” once he’s killed, he flashes back in time and has to live through it all over again. It’s trippy stuff, no doubt, but also probably Cruise’s best film in recent memory without “Mission: Impossible” in the title.

The plan is for Robinson to work with director Doug Liman on the script. Once that’s done, it will be presented to stars Cruise and Blunt, who will then work on their own contracts. The hope is that Liman, Cruise, and Blunt will all return to the sequel and that the goodwill earned by the first ‘Tomorrow’ will pay off with this new film.

Obviously, there’s no release date set for the film, as it’s still not a sure thing this will come together. But considering all the rumblings in the past, this seems like the best shot so far that “Live Die Repeat” will, uh, repeat once more.
