'Operation Mincemeat' Trailer: Colin Firth Stars In New WWII Drama

Actor Colin Firth is no stranger to war films having played a general in Sam Mendes‘ fantastically shot WWI pic “1917” and is taking a bigger role with his new film “Operation Mincemeat” taking place during WWII, a particularly brutal campaign for the Britsh as they had endured bombardments from German war planes while North American allies weren’t as exposed to the Nazi war machine as British citizens were.

The film’s title is based on a real operation that involved planting fake documents on a dead body in enemy waters with the hopes that the German forces would use that false intelligence, potentially allowing British forces to get an edge as the war intensified. However, not everyone is convinced that the ruse will work.

Warner Bros. UK has released a first-look trailer (see below) giving audiences an idea of what to expect from the British war drama that will hit cinemas there in January.

The pic was helmed by director John Madden (“Shakespeare In Love,” “Miss Sloane“) from a screenplay by Michelle Ashford.

In the true-life drama, Firth plays Ewen Montagu in “Operation Mincemeat” alongside others such as Matthew Macfadyen (“Succession“) as Charles Cholmondeley, Penelope Wilton as Hester Leggett, Johnny Flynn as Ian Fleming (author and former intelligence officer), Kelly Macdonald (“Trainspotting,” “Boardwalk Empire“) as Jean Leslie, Jason Isaacs as John Godfrey, and Simon Russell Beale as Winston Churchill.

Back in March, a report from Deadline revealed the film will hit Netflix in North America and Latin America. “Operation Mincemeat” is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2022. A premiere on Netflix should be coming shortly thereafter in the U.S.
