Director Andy Serkis Talks The Big 'Venom 2' Mid-Credit Scene [Spoilers]

*Warning there are spoilers ahead for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.”*

Last weekend saw Sony Pictures come away with the most substantial domestic box office opening since the pandemic started with “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” earning a hefty $90.1 million. One of the big draws seemingly was the mid-credit scene that sadly leaked early thanks to fan screenings that didn’t adhere to Tom Hardy’s instructions, not to spoil the film.

Director Andy Serkis has spoken with The Hollywood Reporter commenting on the scene itself and revealed that the idea to include Tom Holland’s Spider-Man happened “very late” in the process and was “in flux.” Also, mentioning that Spider-Man was potentially going to be in the film itself, but ultimately wasn’t.

[The mid-credits scene was] 100 percent in flux, yeah. It couldn’t have been more in-flux-y if you tried. Yeah, of course, it was something that they talked about from before I even came on to the movie. There were moments where [Spider-Man] was going to be in the story, potentially, and then he wasn’t. But no, we decided that we wanted to really examine the Venom-verse first. So as we were going through principal photography, the inevitable discussions had to be had, but it wasn’t until very, very late on that we reached the precise notion of the teaser that we wanted to lay in there,” Serkis said of including Spider-Man in the mid-credit scene.

The scene still leaves us with questions, such as will Marvel Studios really incorporate Hardy’s goofy Eddie Brock/Venom in films like the upcoming release “Spider-Man: No Way Home” or is the tease of a future crossover simply going to be a one-sided thing? Are Sony-owned Marvel Comics characters only mingling within their own universe, aka in a “Venom 3,” film or will Venom venture into the MCU?

The fan assumption has been because Holland’s Spidey (owned by Sony) shows up in the mid-credit scene that this automatically makes “Venom” and “Venom” Let There Be Carnage” part of the greater MCU. The same theories were applied to the Marvel Television properties but were later revealed by Kevin Feige and James Gunn as taking place outside of the official MCU canon, despite cameos from characters such as Nick Fury, Lady Sif, and Maria Hill in “Agents of SHIELD.”

Michael Keaton’s Vulture from “Spider-Man: Homecoming” appears in the trailer for Jared Leto’s spinoff “Morbius.” Still, Sony has shot down the idea it takes place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe after star Tyrese Gibson seemingly misspoke.

Marvel and Kevin Feige seem to be the real folks to look towards for real clarification here, but they likely won’t be speaking directly on that subject until the press tours for “Eternals” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The only properties in the MCU are ones that Marvel Studios had a hand in making, which allows Feige to have complete oversight on the universe, and it seems unlikely he would suddenly open the floodgates now.
