Keeping the Oscar ceremony in March is something of a surprise in a non-Winter Olympics year. Before the pandemic, the Academy and ABC worked diligently to shorten the schedule for a multitude of reasons including the idea it would increase or stabilize ratings if there was less “awards season fatigue.” For instance, the 92nd telecast occurred on February 9, 2020. That was the last time the Oscars cracked 20 million viewers. COVID pushed the 93rd Oscars to April 25 and the 94th crept back a month earlier to March 27. It’s clear the slight uptick in ratings for the second weekend in March was enough for ABC and the Academy to go with a date to similar to 2023.

It should be noted that barring a change, the Oscar nominations announcement will take place during the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. Always fun for those covering both events.
