'Overlord' Trailer: J.J. Abrams Is Back With A Sci-Fi War Film That Is Not Part Of 'Cloverfield'

The buzz surrounding the film “Overlord” has less to do with what the film is about and more to do if it’s connected to a well-known franchise. You see, back when rumblings came about that J.J. Abrams was producing another mystery sci-fi/action film, everyone assumed that it would be connected to his “Cloverfield” franchise, in some way. There were reports that it was going to be the next entry in the series, but after the release of “Cloverfield Paradox,” it was confirmed that “Overlord” is its own thing.

That being said, you can definitely see why people might assume this is connected to “Cloverfield.” In the first trailer for the film, we are introduced to a young soldier who is being sent to war. The scene feels like something ripped from “Saving Private Ryan.”

However, once he’s shot out of a plane and lands behind enemy lines, the trailer quickly veers off into sci-fi territory with mysterious super soldiers, experiments, and monsters lurking about. There’s also a healthy dose of “Hell’s Bells” by AC/DC.

So, to answer the question, “Overlord” is not a “Cloverfield” movie, but it sure does feel like it, based on this brief bit of footage. The film is directed by Julius Avery, who previously wrote and directed the film “Son of a Gun.” “Overlord” is written by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith, based on a story by Billy Ray.

The film stars Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Pilou Asbæk, John Magaro, and Mathilde Ollivier.

“Overlord will be released on November 9.
