Twenty years seems like a long time, until you’re a person of a certain age and that length of time feels like it passes in the blink of an eye. This is the case with the David Fincher film, “Panic Room,” which was released 20 years ago this week. It surely doesn’t feel like two decades have passed since Fincher, along with his cast of Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker, and Dwight Yoakam, released the blockbuster thriller. Things have changed quite a bit since 2002 in the way films are released, budgets are handed out, and box office money is allocated.
In this episode of The Playlist Podcast, the hosts celebrate the 20th anniversary of “Panic Room” by talking about the film and how Hollywood and filmmaking have changed since the 2002 release. Would “Panic Room” make $200 million worldwide in 2022, as it did 20 years ago? Would it be sent directly to a streamer, and perhaps turned into an event series? And is “Panic Room” an underrated film in the pantheon of David Fincher features?
In addition to talking about the Fincher thriller, the hosts talk about some of the biggest recent news in the film and TV industry, including the 2022 Oscars results (obviously, a quick discussion of “the slap”), the behind-the-scenes drama of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, the recently released Joker clip from “The Batman,” and more.
