'Penny Dreadful' Cancelled After Three Seasons, Eva Green & Creator John Logan Discuss Last Night's Finale

A lot of people have been talking about the big battle onGame Of Thrones” last night, but there was also some TV news that, for some, might be much bigger than that. Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” is often overshadowed by the happenings in Westeros (and, more recently, freshman show “Preacher”), but to its fans it’s one of the best things on television, its all-star horror mash-up walking the line between campy and serious well, particularly when anchored by the central performance by Eva Green.

But last night’s third season finale seemingly ended with ***SPOILER*** the death of a major character in the show, and the title ‘The End,’ leaving fans fearing the worst, and now creator John Logan and Showtime boss David Nevins have confirmed definitively to The Hollywood Reporter that the show won’t continue on.

It was never the highest rated show around, but Logan says that he was the one to make the decision, having made the call midway through season two, because the show was always focused on the character who died last night (naming no names…), and her story had come to an end. And with Logan now working away on his adaptation of Patti Smith’s “Just Kids” for the same network, the end seemed to be natural.

We fell behind on the show midway through Season 2, but had always enjoyed what we’d seen of it, and look forward to catching up on what we missed soon. But at a time when many shows end up outstaying their welcome (particularly at Showtime, who have a propensity to milk their cash cows dry), it’s cheering to see a creator get to be the one to make the call on when the show ends.

Are you a fan who saw last night’s episode? Are you happy that the series ended where it did? Or were you left wanting more from the show’s finale? Let us know in the comments, and watch a video of Logan, Green and co discussing the end below.
