Phantom Thread, Black Mirror Sew Up 2018 CDG Awards Costume Nods

The nominations for the 20th Costume Designer Guild Awards were revealed today and thanks to three thematic categories for both Movies and TV there were few omissions to complain about.  Expected Oscar nominees “Phantom Thread,” “The Shape of Water” and “The Greatest Showman” all made the cut in the very competitive Period Film field with Jacqueline Durran‘s work in “Darkest Hour” and Ann Roth‘s costumes for “The Post” being the only true snubs (although Durran did earn a Sci-Fi/Fantasy nod for “Beauty and the Beast”).

Daniel Day-Lewis made a Balenciaga dress from scratch to prepare for “Phantom Thread”

On the television side Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” continued to be the pleasant surprise of the year-end awards season earning a Period Television nomination while other first timers “Glow,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Star Trek: Discovery” also earned recognition.  It’s also worth noting Maja Meschede‘s work on “Black Mirror: USS Callister” earned a nomination even though it didn’t debut on Netflix until Dec. 29.

The winners will be announced during a ceremony on Feb. 20 in Beverly Hills, CA.
