Music has always been an integral part of the fabric in the films of Paul Thomas Anderson. From his early work, that largely featured the sounds of savant/producer Jon Brion, to his current run of movies, that have been powered by outré leanings of Radiohead‘s Jonny Greenwood, Anderson has been blessed to see his film’s given extra dimension with these compositions. Lately, however, the music has been given an extra chance to shine. In 2016, the Brooklyn Academy Of Music hosted a screening of “Punch-Drunk Love,” accompanied by a performance of the score by the 40-person strong Wordless Music Orchestra, conducted by Ryan McAdams. Now, Anderson’s latest movie is getting similar treatment.

The International Film Festival Rotterdam is teaming up with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra along with key players from the London Contemporary Orchestra to present a screening of “Phantom Thread” with a live score, conducted Robert Ames. That sounds like a pretty terrific way to experience “Phantom Thread,” and Anderson himself will be at the screening to see how it all comes together when it goes down on February 2, 2018.
There’s still no word on an official release for the “Phantom Thread” soundtrack, so for the rest of us that want to see and hear the movie, we’ll have to make do with what we get cinemas when it opens on Christmas Day.
