Quentin Tarantino Says He's "Steering Away" From 'Star Trek' & Talks Unmade 'Halloween' Sequel

The idea that Quentin Tarantino would end his feature filmmaking career with a “Star Trek” movie is something that has bugged many fans over the last year. In interviews, the director seems to hint that it’s a possibility, but many just hoped that he’d cap off his stellar career with one more original film. Well, in a new interview with Consequence of Sound, it appears that “Star Trek” might not be his final film, after all.

“I think I’m steering away from ‘Star Trek,’ but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet,” revealed Tarantino. “In a strange way, it seems like this movie, Hollywood, would be my last. So, I’ve kind of taken the pressure off myself to make that last big voilà kind of statement.”

He continued, “I mean to such a degree there was a moment when I was writing and went, ‘Should I do this now? Should I do something else? Is this the 10th one?’ No, no don’t stop the planets from aligning, what are you, Galactus? If the Earth is saying do it, do it. Not that it was an argument, but a little thought, like, ‘Well, if I’m gonna go out like Max Ophüls style, Lola Montez, this is it, and if It’s not good, then all my other work is trash, alright.’ This would have been the one. But in a weird way, it actually kind of freed me up. I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one’s going to be. I don’t even have a clue.”

Of course, we have to remember that this is Quentin Tarantino we’re talking about. Sure, he may think that “Star Trek” isn’t the right choice for his next film. But he’s also a filmmaker that tends to get these intense moments of inspiration that he rolls with. Perhaps, when he talks to Paramount and the “Star Trek” people, his love of the project will reignite and he’ll end up doing it. Basically, until proven otherwise, let’s not count him out just yet.

Tarantino goes on to explain another time he flirted with the idea of doing a franchise film — “Halloween 6.” The filmmaker explains that back before he was the Tarantino that everyone knows and loves, he was offered the chance to do the sixth film in the ‘Halloween’ franchise. Obviously, that didn’t come to pass, but he did offer up his idea for the film.

“Yeah, yeah, well, way before I’d ever done anything … it would have been if I had done it — I never got hired — but it would have been my job to figure out who the guy in the boots is,” said the filmmaker, referencing a mysterious character that shows up at the end of the fifth film.

He continued, “Yeah, I was like, ‘Leave that scene where [the Man in Black] shows up, alright, and freeze Michael Myers.’ And so the only thing that I had in my mind — I still hadn’t figured out who that dude was — was like the first 20 minutes would have been the Lee Van Cleef dude and Michael Myers on the highway, on the road, and they stop at coffee shops and shit and wherever Michael Myers stops, he kills everybody. So, they’re like leaving a trail of bodies on Route 66.”

Tarantino goes on to praise Rob Zombie’sHalloween” films and said those movies were able to give the director some solace in the fact that he didn’t end up making his slasher film.

“But the thing is now, I am a big fan of the Rob Zombie ‘Halloweens,’” he explained. “When I saw the first one, I didn’t like it at all. I didn’t like the aesthetic. I didn’t like everything that he added to it and then the last hour just becomes this fast forward remake of the first one. What the fuck is all this shit? Eight months later, I watched it on video… and I really liked them once I got all the preconceptions out of my head.”

Now that it appears that “Star Trek” is off the table and a last-minute revisit to the “Halloween” franchise is long in the rearview mirror, we still have plenty of time to wait and see what Quentin Tarantino has up his sleeve for his 10th and final film.
