With “A Quiet Place” hitting Blu-ray soon, one of the producers, Andrew Form, is making the rounds talking about the film. And Collider was able to ask him about a sequel to Paramount’s smash hit horror film. Particularly, they asked if actor/director John Krasinski would be back in some capacity for the film.
Without giving any specifics, Form said:
“Oh [Krasinski is] definitely involved. We’re lucky on this one. I’ve had movies where the studio says to you, ‘Here’s your date. Let’s go!’ and on this one we’re not rushing anything, which is amazing. So we’re gonna take our time, we’re gonna figure out where to go, but there is no rush on it and we’re just starting to talk about it. We’re figuring out what everyone’s involvement’s gonna be and what the actual next movie’s gonna be. The first one is so special to us that we really want to take our time with this and not rush anything.”
There’s a couple of things to take from this comment. First, it’s refreshing to hear a producer of a hit studio film say he doesn’t want to rush the sequel. In today’s Hollywood, if a film has franchise potential and makes a ton of money, studios will announce a release date without a script. And secondly, it’s great to know that Krasinski will be involved in the sequel. It’s clear that his imprint is a large part of why the film rose above the typical genre trappings and became a great film about a family.
“It’s such a special movie to us, the experience and everything. It’s easy to rush these and we’ve made movies in the past where we’ve rushed them through and we’ve felt it, and we just don’t wanna do it on this one. We really don’t. We really just wanna take our time and as long as it takes, it takes. It has to be the right story, just like the first one. It just has to be,” Form continued.
As we’ve said in the past, Paramount is hoping that “A Quiet Place” launches a much-needed franchise for the studio. In recent years, the studio has been struggling to find a hit film and is currently in the middle of rebooting ‘G.I. Joe’ and trying a third “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film just to see if either one of those can recapture their money making glory.
But “A Quiet Place” is a bit of a quandary for the studio and it makes sense that they’re wanting to take it slow. Obviously, they want Krasinski to be involved, but that’s not a guarantee…
*SPOILERS*
As we know, Krasinski’s character dies in the film, and the fate of his family is left up in the air at the end. So, realistically, there’s no obvious sequel story there. Perhaps, they could go the prequel route and bring Krasinski back to show more of his family at the beginning of the alien invasion. Or they could go spin-off, and as the director mentioned before, focus on another family dealing with the monsters that attack anything that makes a noise.
Well, it appears we still have plenty of time to speculate.
