'West Side Story' Star Rachel Zegler To Play Lead Role In Disney's Live-Action 'Snow White'

At this point, is it even news to say Disney is mining its extensive library of animated classics for live-action remakes? According to Deadline, “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler has been cast as Snow White in the upcoming live-action remake of the classic animated film. Obviously, even though we’ve seen a ton of these live-action remakes over the past several years, “Snow White” holds a special place in the pantheon of Disney films because of its historical significance of being the “first” of its kind back in 1937.

“Snow White” tells the story of the title character, who along with a group of dwarves, attempts to escape the evil magic of the Queen, who is jealous of Snow White’s beauty. Blah, blah, blah, things happen, songs are sung, magical magic occurs, and a man comes to rescue the helpless woman. You know, typical Disney shit.

Though she has yet to appear in a film that has been released, Zegler is already one of the most promising up-and-coming actresses working today. Of course, that title is given whenever Steven Spielberg plucks you out of obscurity and makes you the lead in his massive budget musical, “West Side Story.” In addition to that film, she’s also currently filming “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which marks her superhero debut. So, why not add a Disney live-action remake to the list?

Production on “Snow White” is expected to begin in early 2022, which makes a 2023 release date seem likely.
