"West Side Story's' Rachel Zegler Cast In 'Shazam: Fury Of The Gods'

It’s been a couple of years since DC Films and Warner Bros. released “Shazam!” And over that time, fans have been wondering when they’d get the sequel to David F. Sandberg’s film. Well, we’ve known for a while now that “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” is coming (not until 2023, however) but little else is known about the feature. Now, just to keep the teases going, THR has revealed one of the major new additions to the cast.

According to THR, young actress Rachel Zegler has been added to the cast of “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” in what is described as a “key role.” Given the fact that Zegler is roughly the same age as “Shazam!” star Asher Angel and a lot of the other young kids that make up the Shazam Family that was revealed at the end of the film, we can probably assume that she’s either a friend of theirs or perhaps some sort of villain that also turns into a muscular superpowered being.

Those wondering about what Zegler brings to the film will have to wait a while to really find out. The actress has yet to make her big-screen debut, but she’s about to do that in a huge way as one of the leads in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming “West Side Story” feature. At the age of 16, she was chosen from a pool of 30,000 auditioners to nab the female lead in the film, opposite Ansel Elgort. That film has been a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic delays and isn’t expected to arrive in theaters until December 10 (a full year after its original release date). Obviously, the folks at WB must be excited by what they hear about “West Side Story” to give Zegler such a high-profile follow-up film.

“Shazam: Fury of the Gods” sees the return of filmmaker David F. Sandberg and his “Shazam!” cast in a sequel to that 2019 film. But if you’re hoping for more DC content that is tangentially related to Billy Batson and his superhero pals, “Black Adam” is arriving next year and finds Dwayne Johnson playing one of Shazam’s most famous adversaries in his own standalone feature.
