Having a superpowered child can’t be easy. We’ve seen this sort of premise used in recent films like “Freaks” and “Fast Color,” where we realize that having any sort of supernatural abilities ultimately leads to persecution and government intervention instead of the brightly-colored, superhero-loving world that you see in Marvel films. And Michael B. Jordan is looking to explore this story even further with his upcoming Netflix series “Raising Dion.”

As seen in the first look photos and from what you can surmise from the title, alone, “Raising Dion” is focused on the young child that begins to develop superpowers and his mother, who must protect him from those that want to apprehend him and exploit him. Jordan is set to play the boy’s deceased father, which likely means the actor is going to have a glorified cameo. The series is based on a short by Dennis Liu.

Outside of Jordan, the series features actors Alisha Wainwright, Ja’Siah Young, Jason Ritter, Jazmyn Simon, and Sammi Haney. Not only is Jordan one of the stars, but he also produced the series. “Raising Dion” is executive produced and showrun by Carol Barbee, who is probably best known for her work on various TV series including “Falling Skies,” “UnReal,” “Jericho,” and “Touch.”

“Raising Dion” arrives on Netflix on October 4.

Here’s the synopsis, as well as the images and the original short:

Raising Dion follows the story of a woman named Nicole (Alisha Wainwright), who raises her son Dion (newcomer Ja’Siah Young) after the death of her husband, Mark (Michael B. Jordan). The normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities. Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat (Jason Ritter), and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities.
