DreamWorks Animation had a big hit to close out 2022 with “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish.” Will the studio’s next feature fare as well with critics? Audiences find out this summer when “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” surfs into theaters everywhere in June.
The upcoming film follows a teenage girl desperate to fit into her high school who discovers, against her mom’s wishes, that she’s the heir to the throne of the warrior Kraken queens who rule the seven seas.

Sixteen-year-old Ruby Gillman learns that she is in the next legendary line of sea krakens. Despite her lofty destiny, she is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High. Ruby struggles even more to fit in when her mother forbids her from going to the beach. After disobeying her mother’s rules, she discovers that she is descended from the warrior Kraken queens and will ascend to the throne as the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas, her grandmother.
The animated film features voice work from Lana Condor as Ruby, Toni Collette as Ruby’s mother, and Jane Fonda as the Warrior Queen Of The Seven Seas. Other voice actors include Annie Murphy, Sam Richardson, Liza Koshy, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, and Jaboukie Young-White.
“Vivo” director Kirk DeMicco helms “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” while Pam Brady pens the film’s script. Faryn Pearl is also on board the film as co-director, with Kelly Cooney Cilella producing.
