“Deadpool” was a smash hitĀ for a variety of reasons: the script found the tone audiences loved; the budget was modest, meaning the filmmakers could take greater risks; but most importantly, the studio pretty much stayed out of everyone’s way. Director Tim Miller, star Ryan Reynolds, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick more or less made the film they wanted to make, and 20th Century Fox was rewarded for that trust with a global box-office hit. But could there be a casting battle looming for the sequel?
The latest rumors suggest there could be some wrangling over who will play Cable in “Deadpool 2.” While there has been plenty of fan-casting over the past several months, Jeff Sneider of Mashable revealed on Meet The Movie Press that Kyle Chandler (“Friday Night Lights,” “Bloodline,” “Carol,” “Manchester By The Sea“) is the name that has been tossed around for a while now.
“People were talking about Cable from ‘Deadpool 2.’ There’s been a name floating around for Cable for months,” Sneider said (via Comic Book). “Hasn’t changed. Don’t know if its changed. Didn’t make any calls about this. This was just the name that has been out there for months. So take this with a gigantic grain of salt. The biggest grain of salt your tiny little brain can imagine. The name that is floating around for Cable right now is Kyle Chandler.”
However, Umberto Gonzalez of The Wrap countered on Twitter (via Omega Underground) that while Miller might want Chandler, the studio is keen on a bigger star and wants Liam Neeson for the role. This may be because the character is seen as having the potential to spin off into their own franchise.
Meanwhile, for the role of Domino, Mackenzie Davis of “Halt And Catch Fire” has been mentioned as a possibility for the “scene-stealer” part.
As always, none of this official, but with production slated to start in early 2017, we’ll likely have official answers on casting soon.
