Russo Brothers To Tackle Crime Thriller 'Cherry' As First Post-'Avengers' Directing Gig

Sure, the directing duo of the Russo Brothers just released a $2 billion behemoth known as “Avengers: Infinity War.” And yes, they have another probably-$2 billion grosser coming next may in “Avengers 4.” But the big question is what is next for the blockbuster filmmakers? We already knew that they’d be taking a break from Marvel and superheroes, but now we know exactly what their next directing gig will probably be.

According to Deadline, the Russos and their new studio AGBO are finalizing a deal for the rights for the novel “Cherry,” which the brothers are eyeing as their first post-“Avengers” film. And according to the report, Joe and Anthony Russo want the story so badly, they’re willing to outbid Warner Brothers and Sony for the rights.

“Cherry” is a novel that tells the story of a former Army medic that is returning from Iraq with some serious undiagnosed PTSD. After becoming addicted to opioids, the medic takes it upon himself to start robbing banks. “Cherry” is based on the true story from first-time author Nico Walker. Deadline says that the Russos are incredibly passionate about the material, as Walker and the duo both share Cleveland as their hometown, and grew up in a similar area. And the Russos also feel drawn to the project based on the opioid aspect, as the report states they have lost friends due to similar circumstances.

Deadline says the book is being described as “Jesus’ Son” meets “Reservoir Dogs,” with its mix of love, war, bank robberies, and drugs, all told at a fast pace. As mentioned, AGBO outbid offers from Warner Bros. and Sony. WB was courting the rights-holders with a package that included James Franco to direct, with “Stronger’sJohn Pollono to write. Sony, on the other hand, didn’t mention names of who might be attached, but was hoping that past success would give the studio the upper hand.
