The Alec Baldwin-led Western, “Rust,” resumed the New Mexico production in 2023 after the shooting death of the cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021 at the hands of the producer/actor who plays an outlaw, Harland Rust, in the film that now has a first-look trailer ahead of a theaterical release in May.
“Rust” was written and directed by Joel Souza from a story put together by both Souza and Baldwin. Joining Baldwin in the gritty film is Travis Fimmel (“Raised By Wolves,” “Dune The Prophecy”), Josh Hopkins, Patrick Scott McDermott, Frances Fisher, and Jake Busey.
An official synopsis for the Wastern pic:
In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) “accidentally kills” a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico. As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named “Preacher” (Travis Fimmel).
“Rust is a heartfelt and emotional story forged in the struggles of the new frontier — a story of the ripples that a single violent act can send through generations and the hard-fought redemption to be found in a world where the line between good and evil can often be unclear,” Melina Spadone, a representative of Rust Movie Productions LLC, said in a statement posted by the folks over at People Magazine.
Given the controversial aspect of the film and Baldwin’s wonky reputation with the public after the on-set accidental death, we’re curious how the general public is going to react to “Rust.” Certainly, there is are some great cinematography in this new footage, which Spadone was quick to point out was thanks to late Hutchins.
“Rust” is coming to theaters on May 2, and you can watch that first-look trailer below.
