Sandra Bullock Praises Netflix & Says Without The Platform, “A Lot Of People Wouldn’t Be Working”

It’s a bit overwhelming when you sit back and really try to take inventory of everything Netflix will likely release in 2022. Dozens of films. Dozens of TV shows. Billions of dollars worth of content will be beamed worldwide overnight into more than 200 million homes. Now, with two massive Netflix successes under her belt, Sandra Bullock believes the streaming platform is a godsend for people like her.

Speaking to THR, Bullock was talking about her recent Netflix film, “The Unforgiveable” (our review), which has already become one of the biggest hits ever for the streaming platform (if its stats are to be believed). And in talking about this new film and its global reach and the fact that Netflix is paying for films starring actresses her age, Bullock believes the streaming platform is ultimately a good thing for creative types.

“They’re good to artists. They’re good to filmmakers,” said Bullock. “If it wasn’t for Netflix, a lot of people wouldn’t be working. Their stories wouldn’t be told. Who would think that me, as a woman, would still be working at this point? I would have been out in the cow pasture. It’s true.”

The real selling point, for Bullock at least, is the fact that her Netflix projects are being seen all over the world, and the inverse is also true, with the platform opening up American audiences to a ton of international content, such as “Squid Game,” which dominated the charts in 2021.

“[‘Squid Game’ is] one of the bigger ones, but I’ve seen more work from other countries told by other nationalities, and we never would have had that ten years ago, ever,” she added. “It brings people together in a way that really, you know, we’re getting more and more divided, and yet, we have the streamers that are able to blend our stories together and go, look, same story, just different.”

Obviously, Bullock has a lot of skin in the Netflix game, which is why she is one of the biggest proponents of streaming. Her 2018 film, “Bird Box,” is one of the early Netflix Original films that really broke out globally and became an overnight hit. That sort of success has been replicated quite a few times over the years, with films like “Extraction,” “Red Notice,” and most recently, “Don’t Look Up.” But it’s clear Bullock has felt the full power of the streaming platform and doesn’t feel as if Netflix is the big bad industry killer that many do.

“The Unforgiveable” is available now on Netflix.
