‘Fallout’: Jonathan Nolan Will Produce & Direct Amazon’s TV Adaptation Of The Videogame Franchise

Over at HBO, the network is diving into the post-apocalyptic video game adaptation business with the upcoming TV series “The Last of Us.” Not to be outdone, it appears Amazon is ready to get the ball officially rolling on its own post-apocalyptic video game adaptation with “Fallout,” and the streaming platform thinks Jonathan Nolan is the right Nolan to direct.

According to Deadline, the previously-announced “Fallout” TV series is moving ahead with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy on board as producers (they signed a massive deal with Amazon a few years back). However, we now have news that Nolan is said to perform double-duty as producer and director on the series’ pilot episode. In addition, Amazon has brought on  Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”) and Graham Wagner (“Silicon Valley”) as co-showrunners of the series.

For those who haven’t played the video game, “Fallout” tells the story of a post-apocalypse brought on by a nuclear war that leaves the U.S. in a state of radiated rubble. However, this isn’t your typical US, as the nuclear war happened at a time when the U.S. was going all-in on nuclear energy and society was already adopting robot helpers and other “Jetsons”-esque retro-futuristic conveniences.

It’s unclear how the series will adapt the video game franchise. Each of the games tells a unique story set during different eras of the post-war environment, where characters are leaving their fallout shelters to explore what’s left of the world.

Nolan and Joy are best known for their work on “Westworld,” but this is one of the few instances where Nolan has actually stepped behind the camera to direct. He previously did direct episodes of his other series, “Person of Interest” and “Westworld.”

A release date for “Fallout” has yet to be announced, but production is said to begin later this year.
